Elder's Corner: We've Come This Far By Faith - by Thomasa McCown

I still recall the day we processed down the median on Hunter Boulevard performing the ancient Christian dance of reverence, the tripudium (three steps forward and one step back) to the doors of Mt. Baker Park Presbyterian (MBPP) Church. There were drums to keep the beat, balloons and bubbles. There were also feelings of trepidation, excitement, anxiety, and expectation — these feelings generated from what we knew and did not know. We knew we had sold our building on Findlay Street and would be graciously nested in MBPPC. We knew we would build a new building but, how, where, and when we did not know. Our theme song that morning was We’ve Come This Far by Faith.

As followers of Jesus we know to “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. (MATTHEW 7:7-8 ESV). Indeed! Through it all: capital campaigns, big plans, financial short-comings, death in the family, down-sizing, stumbling blocks, stepping stones, a name change and the retirement of our beloved Pastor, we have held on to God’s unchanging hand and She has held tight to ours!

Go tell it on the mountain that we have reached the promised land! We are turning the soil and planting the seeds. We are building a building that will house a church who worships an inclusive loving God! I am so thrilled about us building a church I cannot contain my excitement! Every day I thank God for all that He has done and will do on behalf of those that love Jesus Christ, follow and emulate His way!

Saints, we have reached another mile stone on our journey and the days ahead are filled with trepidation, excite- ment, anxiety, and expectation. We have no idea what the future holds but we know who holds the future, and we know we have come this far by faith: “the magnetic pull of the heart’s desire. An inner knowing that brings spiritual/emotional assurance. The substance/foundation of that which one believes.”

We’ve come this far by faith
Leaning on the LORD
Trusting in His Holy Word
He never failed me yet
Oh, can’t turn around
We’ve come this far by faith.
