It was shortly before Easter a few years ago that I came to this congregation and began serving as your music director. This position came at a time when I was dealing with some life challenges and was a little unsure about where I was going. I had just left the cruise ship entertainment business and was looking for the next chapter in my life, not knowing what it would look like or where it would even take place. When I replied to a somewhat generic Craigslist post seeking a church music director, little did I know that soon my search would be over and I would be home. The last few years with this congregation have taught me so much. I’ve explored my faith, developed my skill as musician and director, and met many wonderful people who have shared their own stories with me. I was welcomed in and lifted up.
As I reflect on this time with Welcome Table, it’s clear to me that this journey I’ve taken with you has helped me to grow immensely, and enriched my life in ways I didn’t expect. This growth has in turn allowed me to yet again take another step forward on my journey as a musician as I accept a position at an historic church in Hawaii.
The Lutheran Church of Honolulu has called me to be their Director of Music, heading up a rich program and allowing me to be a part of a wonderful 100+ year old musical legacy. Marcus and I will sell or donate many of our possessions, move out of our apartment, and board a plane on July 10 that will take us from the beautiful Pacific Northwest to our new home on the island of Oahu. My hope is that as many of you as possible can join me for my remaining Sundays at Welcome Table, ending with my final day on June 14.
Thank you for your support, love, story-telling, and singing. I will miss this church and her people. It’s heartening to think that in the not-so-distant future, I will be able to visit and bring some Aloha to you all in your new home on Beacon Hill. God be with you till we meet again!
